Sea turtles

Latortugafeliz is a non-profit organization for the protection of sea turtles in Costa Rica and the improvement of the living conditions of the local inhabitants.
The project is situated on a Caribbean beach of Costa Rica, 1 km north of the mouth of the Pacuare River. The beach is part of the 50 km stretch between Tortuguero National Park and the harbor of Limón. The area is a nesting beach for four Sea Turtles spieces (Leatherback, Hawksbill, Loggerhead and the Green Turtle). In the project participate all 45 inhabitants of the area.

Sea Turtles – threats to their survival
Seven sea turtle species swim in the seas of our planet since the time of the dinosaurs 100 million years ago. They have successfully dealt with natural disasters and enemies for millions of years. However, human activity appears to be a problem difficult to surpass. The human population increase and the ease of human access to beaches where the turtles lay their eggs, as well as the use of recreational vehicles in and out of the water

have contribute to a steep decline of sea turtle populations. Many sea turtles are being killed every year for their shell which is used to manufacture artefacts sold to tourists. Hawksbill turtles (Erethmochelys imbicata) are the ones particularly in danger due to their pretty shell. Fishing with nets and long-lines is another danger for these air breathing animals who are often caught accidentally. Plastic bags floating on the sea are often mistaken for gellyfish by the leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) and consumed with fatal consequences.
However one of the most important threats is destruction of their nesting sites due to development. Lights form bars, hotels, restaurants and cars discourage the female turtles from approaching the beach and disorient the hatchlings on their way to the sea. The use of vehicles on the beach and their tyre marks produce unsurpassable barriers for the tiny hatchlings. Vehicles and human activity can also compact the nests and make it more difficult for the newly hatched turtles to come out. Many successful sea turtle protection projects have taught us that people living in the local communities can become the best friend of the turtles rather than their enemy. They actively support the projects when they are shown how humans and turtles can share the beach profitably. Apart from the jobs created due to conservation work, different types of tourists can be attracted to their hotels and restaurants set back from the beach.

Archelon in Greece is supported by volunteering work from hundreds of volunteers every year to protect 75 km of beach which contains more than 2500 nests. More than 300 sea turtles are being marked every year. More then 50 turtles every year are being brought to the rescue centre with various types of injuries. Volunteers restore sand dunes and observe the movements of sea turtles via satellite transmitters. Volunteers also educate on these magnificent animals and their needs for survival more than 15,000 students and 200,000 visitors to the beaches.
